We are all players on the world's stage.
Changing identities. Changing roles. |
|
The disguise and the mask are an integral
part of our lives. The transition between
roles often happens almost unconsciously. |
|
|
|
Questions of identity are concerns which are
constantly being repeated in life and in art
-the dialogue between authenticity and
hypocrisy, between exposure and concealment,
and matters which surround us everywhere, on
billboards, on the TV and in adverts. The
question: Who am I? How do I want to look?
What do I want people to think about me?
What is real? Indeed, is there anything such
as "real"? Or is everything in the eye of
the beholder – these are everyday questions
which go to the basic meaning of human
existence. |
|
These questions keep returning and echoing
around us in art a well, from the dawn of
history. They appear in tribal worship in
ceremonies of festivals, coming-of-age,
marriage and going off to war. Illustrations
of myths and history on cave walls and
through to museum exhibitions, and
presenting images not only of real animals
but also imaginary creatures, devils, ghosts
and primeval parents. |
|
The masks found their way into festivals and
events in each and every religion, each of
them relating to a particular time of the
year where changing identities in
legitimate, with the mask and the disguise
becoming a festival, a carnival. |
|
|
|
The invitation to the "Carnival of Masks"
exhibition resulted in a many reactions and
enquiries, from all areas of art: drawing,
sculpture, and photography. 90 artists from
Israel and abroad sent pictures of works.
Each artist sent his own mask. The
collection of works selected for the
exhibition present the modern interpretation
of the subject of "masks". |
